You own a business. You are great at what you do. That’s why you started this business. But now that you have employees, it’s not just about you getting the work done. Your people are doing much of the work with your customers/clients and you have to lead and manage them. Sure, there are a few who seem more motivated, but many are 9-to-5’ers. Sometimes they don’t care about the quality of their own work. Sometimes it feels like you’re coaxing them, reminding them (like your kids) to do the little things that make a difference. Yet, you care that your people like their jobs, that they do well and each one grows into his/her own potential. You know the salary supports their families and you care about their families, too.

What your issues tend to be

You are wondering how your company is going to grow? If so many of your employees aren’t ‘owning’ their roles in your company, how will revenues increase? You want more customers/clients to bring in the needed revenues. But you’re trusting your unmotivated employees to represent your brand in the marketplace. They provide adequate customer service most of the time, but they don’t go above and beyond to delight the customer, generate raving fans and keep customers coming back. You want lots more word-of-mouth referrals coming in. You want to see your employees take some initiative and be proactively responsible for achieving their goals. You’d like to see all of them become A players. But you don’t know what you can do to get them motivated. Just offering them big salaries and bonuses is not practical and won’t work long term. There is so much more you need to know to manage a business now that you have more than a few employees. And you don’t have time to learn.
